MEANWHILE… IN COVENTRY: An awesome free festival of graphic storytelling

Meanwhile.... in Coventry

On 18th & 19th, September 2021 Meanwhile... in Coventry will welcome some of the greatest comic and graphic novel artists and writers in a celebration of graphic storytelling.

The guest list includes the creative minds behind some of the Western culture's most enduring (and infamous!) fictional characters.

The Festival programme features dozens of different activities and events, most of which are free to book and explore, including some incredible Workshops with huge talents, Talks and Panel Discussions with famous artists, and a Battle Boards street-art ‘tournament’ in University Square.  We’ve also got Live Art demos, a big Drink & Draw on Saturday evening in the New Cathedral (and a Softdrink & Draw for the daytime), screen-printing workshops, a cosplay competition and more besides.

We’ll welcome the likes of Kieron Gillen, Al Ewing, Laura Howell, John Higgins, SPZero, Dave Johnson, Jeff Johnson, Hannah Berry, Sonia Leong, Mike Collins, John McCrae… custodians of and contributors to the on-going sagas of Batman, Spiderman, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Who, Star Wars, The Beano, Sherlock, The Boys, Hellblazer… and a whole host of original characters and stories you’ll probably see in new Netflix series soon!  These are some of the greatest storytellers around.  They’ll be in the dramatic setting of the Cathedral Ruins, with plenty going on in the areas close by.

All our venues are a stone’s throw from each other, clustered around University Square, where we’ll host live art on and around the main stage.

Their website ( is being added to all the time with new activities to book passes for. Vendors can get in touch too, either via the site or by emailing

We’ve tried really hard to make almost everything free to enjoy.  We planning a relaxed, inclusive and fun experience for people of all ages, with family-orientated workshops right through to vocationally-focussed lectures and artist interviews for the really passionate to get a glimpse of what it’s like to write and draw some of the biggest characters in the world.

The team behind Meanwhile, illustrator Simon Myers, film director Samuel Smith and Jon Tickner, a brand marketer, have committed to creating a space for people to witness, learn, get drawing and find new ways to express themselves.  And we’re planning an education outreach programme too, bringing illustrated storytelling into school, to help kids discover and create their own stories.

Says Simon, "We wanted to create the type of event we would love to go to. Something fun, inspiring and hands-on. An event where you can talk to people who tell stories for a living. To show people the depth, breadth and scope of illustrated storytelling and comic-books, and indeed how to tell, write, or draw their own. It hasn’t been easy pulling everything together into what will mostly be a free festival, but that’s what we’re striving for”.

Meanwhile… in Coventry is a free event. You can enjoy everything in University Square. But to enter a venue you will need a ticket. Tickets are free and available on Meanwhilein Coventry's website.
