Folklorica - free digital installation

Location: Warwick Arts Centre Gibbet Hill Road, Coventry, CV4 7AL

Folklorica is a new augmented reality experience for visitors to Warwick Arts Centre, created by Coventry-based artist Edie Jo Murray.

Folklorica will be available to everyone for FREE

Folklorica brings to life a series of animated digital sculptures inspired by the folklore and legends of the University of Warwick campus and its surroundings in Coventry and Warwickshire. Ancient legends such as Coventry’s elephant and castle and Warwickshire’s bear and ragged staff, which both feature on the University crest, meet contemporary icons such as Rolf the campus cat in this alternative reality.

How to participate
All visitors can access the experience by using their mobile device to scan a QR code on a number of coloured floor stickers outside the Arts Centre. This launches a website which allows you to view the digital sculptures through the camera on your phone as if the artworks were in real-world space in front of you. You can ‘place’ the sculptures anywhere in the vicinity of the Arts Centre, and then walk around, zoom in and out and resize them.

Taking inspiration from our Sculpture Trail, Folklorica invites visitors to interact with the artworks and think about where to place them. The individual sculptures feature uniquely crafted digitally-sculpted, painted and animated elements that Edie has produced in direct response to our location. Although it’s digital artwork, Edie still crafts her work by hand as a traditional artist might, and combining this approach with technology is an integral part of her creative process.

The animation of these local symbols and characters brings a playfulness to the work – the result is a fun experience that can be enjoyed by all ages.

The experience is also accessible at

Don’t forget to send us screenshots of your discoveries on Instagram, using the hashtag #folklorica!
