Christmas light show

The annual family Christmas switch-on event will have a new star attraction this year, as it features artist-designed lighting and a unique family animation show which brings the festive spirit to Cov

The Council, working with the Coventry Business Improvement District and UK City of Culture 2021 as well as many local performers, is bringing a great programme of family-focused music and dance to Broadgate, along with a spectacular ‘glow light’ stage show and projections across the buildings to end the evening.

A large real Christmas tree will bring extra sparkle to the evening as the excitement builds into the festive period, as part of the #YuleLoveCov Christmas programme.

This free live event starts at 5pm on Wednesday 20 November with a stage show presented by JD and Producer Paul from Free Radio. To encourage people to join in the festivities on the night, mark the start of late-night shopping and encourage footfall in the lead up to the important Christmas shopping period, the Council is offering free car parking for anyone that enters after 3pm in its city centre car parks. This free after 3pm offer will continue for all late-night Wednesday shopping days making it more affordable for people to visit the city.

Andy Williams, Director of Business Investment and Culture at the Council said:

Our ambition this year is to bring something unique and different to Coventry and with our event partners in the UK City of Culture 2021 and Coventry BID teams, we think it’ll certainly grab people’s attention!  We are delighted to be able to present unique artistic commissions as part of the event, to bring a fresh look to the start of Christmas in Coventry.

“I am looking forward to seeing as many people as possible come together to enjoy what will be a fun event for all the family, followed by an opportunity for some seasonal shopping.”  our work.

Trish Willetts, Coventry BID Manager and Director said:

“We are very excited to show the residents of Coventry a brand-new offer for 2019.  This event is a tradition for the city and the BID businesses are delighted to be playing a part in bringing something magical to celebrate the start of the Christmas Campaign, especially for the young people that come to the event.

“More wonderful family fun is on the way so keep an eye on the City Centre Facebook page for all the exciting #YuleLoveCov details.”

The evening starts from 5pm with the Coventry Young Ambassadors Choir kicking the live entertainment off at 5.30pm. The young people from primary schools throughout Coventry are given the opportunity to be ambassadors for their city at cultural and sporting events.

Now numbering over 340, the trained Coventry Young Ambassadors from 30 primary schools, will be performing three family Christmas songs.

The talented young people at Freeman Dance, one of the largest and most successful dance schools in the Midlands, present two sparkly dance shows dancing their way into Christmas at 5.45pm with a second performance later in the evening.

Josh Hale is the first of the singer/songwriters taking to the stage during the evening singing original material and festive classics.

Josh is a winner of the Godiva Calling 2018 singer/songwriter heats and has performed at the Godiva Festival.

The children from Sacred Heart Catholic School will be showing off their moves as they prepare to take part in the Great Big Dance Off in the spring of 2020. The Great Big Dance Off is a popular national dance competition open to schools across England and Wales, bringing together children of all ages and abilities where the emphasis is on having a good time.

Next, music teacher Miss Newcombe brings in Ernesford Grange school choir to entertain the crowds with popular songs and festive favourites followed by local singer/songwriter Abz Winter bringing more great music to the event with originals and seasonal favourites.

Strictly Christmas is now firmly in the local seasonal diary with sell-out shows all in aid of Zoe’s Place baby hospice. Contestants will be showing their skills on stage and helping to raise awareness of this valuable local hospice.

Following Strictly are the Coventry City Council Choir and University Hospital Voice Squad which were created in 2018 as part of a UK City of Culture funded project to help staff to do something fun together. These two brilliant local choirs join forces to create a fantastic musical launch into the Christmas spirit.

Taking the stage just before 7pm is the HALO Glow Show. This highly visual stage act features super-bright LED (glowing) hula hoops and juggling clubs which create complex patterns drawn in the air by the four virtuoso circus artists and is not to be missed.

They’re behind you!

No, they’re not, they are on stage bringing seasonal silliness from this year’s pantomime at the Belgrade Theatre, Puss In Boots, to the Christmas Lights Switch On. Simon Pudding and Puss In Boots will be appearing just after 7pm to tell you about the show, which opens on 27 November.

Tom Barnwell is a local singing star having appeared on “The Voice” and Tom’s unique voice and stage presence bring us all singing up to the appearance of Santa and the Lord Mayor on stage, building up to the amazing light projection show and the Christmas lights switch on at approximately 7.40pm.

The event will finish around 7.50pm.
