Tinker | Make | Play Engineers are embracing eggy puns (and eggtivities) this Easter holiday and will find themselves faced with eggstreme challenges: Will they be able to transport a variety of fake eggs safely up and down, forwards, and backwards? Will their eggs survive a drop? How many eggs will fit on their vehicle? Tinkering with STEM concepts showcased in some of our museum objects, join us to make eggcellent transport and find out how many eggs your machine can hold and move.

Coventry’s hidden gem, St Mary’s Guildhall, is one of the finest Guildhalls in the country. A rare survivor of the English Civil War and the Blitz, it has reopened as a visitor attraction following a £6 million programme of restoration.
With its rich history of partying, power and propaganda, St Mary’s Guildhall has acted as the centre of power in England during the War of the Roses, housed the crown jewels, been the prison of Mary Queen of Scots and hosted famous literary figures, such as George Eliot.
Located on Bayley Lane in Coventry city centre’s Cathedral quarter, St Mary’s Guildhall is now open seven days a week. Visitors of all ages can discover its many stories with brand new cutting-edge digital tours and augmented reality, where figures from the past come to life.
A Guildhall full of fascinating stories
Ruling the city: The ancient St Mary’s Guildhall survives the Second World War as an emblem of medieval Coventry’s resilience and rebirth.
Food and feasting: The Guildhall’s medieval kitchen became a soup kitchen to feed Coventry’s poor and destitute during great hardship in the 1800s.
Masters of the medieval era: The Guildhall’s Armoury room became the weapon store for the successful defence of the city following repeated royalist attacks.
Fit for royalty: Between 1569 and 1570, 27 year old Mary Queen of Scots was detained at St Mary’s Guildhall on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I ‘for her own protection’.
Accessibility
For everyone to enjoy St Mary’s Guildhall, there is a lift to the first floor and rising platform into the Muniment Room. There is a new spiral staircase to the 2nd floor and where access is not step free, 360 panoramic views of the rooms are available on the digital tour tablets.
There are toilet and baby changing facilities on the ground floor located opposite the Cloisters.
Please note we are currently operating a cashless environment and will only be accepting card payments.
*Please note due to unforeseen circumstances and private events, opening times may differ. Before traveling you are advised to check our ticket booking calendar to view availability.

Did you ever wonder what engineering is all about?
At Coventry Transport Museum, we believe it all starts with curiosity, perseverance, and creativity. In proper engineering style, we have come up with the perfect formula for a workshop that will help develop those engineering skills.
Here it goes:
Tinker (To tinker at Coventry Transport Museum means hands-on exploring what real stuff is made of and how it works. Take a precision screwdriver and pliers to open up a laptop, vacuum cleaner, or any other everyday item. Find out what parts are hidden behind the covers and see what they do. We will provide a how to with the tools, the safety gear and the reference books because we are also always learning.)
+
Make (To make at Coventry Transport Museum means letting your imagination run wild, digging through our huge variety of resources and getting into the flow of making. Whether your project needs hardware, cardboard, electronics, timber, needlework or paint, our workshop will always be stocked with a broad selection of random stuff for you to work with. We will support wherever possible – as we are proud to be some of the biggest cheerleaders for great inventions.)
+
Play (To play at Coventry Transport Museum means to embrace PlayHEM which involves the nonsensical, the playful, the chaos, the unknown, the uncertainty, the process to make accidental learning happen. Get stuck playing in an open-ended play environment that offers a choice of wonderfully weird, yet also engineering-related, playthings and we will simply enjoy noticing how your whole family unknowingly plays about with engineering concepts.)

Tinker | Make | Play Engineers
You will need to bring:
• At least one very supportive grown-up to be with you throughout this workshop. We know from experience that all mums, dads, uncles, aunties, older siblings, grandparents, carers are perfectly qualified for this role as no previous engineering experience is needed (they are indeed very useful and really, really good at handing you tools)
We offer:
• A safe and relaxed space.
• Engineering Skills! You will use real tools to take apart or make things. So, you will build up your engineering skills no matter what.
• Permission to destroy! So you can fully explore some things, we let you break them AND you will not be told off*.
• Fun! We are prepared to throw one or two surprise maker challenges at you just to keep you on your toes.
• Expertise! Our amazing experts from the Learning Team will encourage you throughout. They are experts in playful engineering. That means they are curious, they persevere, are imaginative, love solving problems and teamwork. They will happily offer their expertise and support you when needed.
*Please note we take no responsibility for the inspiration we evoke in your children to destroy and create their own inventions with your household gadgets.

Since it’s transformation from the much loved mainstay of the Coventry music scene, Taylor Johns, to a charitable organisation in August 2013, The Tin Music and Arts has gone from strength to strength. Named in homage to the now sadly closed Tin Angel, The Tin Music and Arts is committed to creating a thriving, artistic hub here at the Canal Basin as well as in other venues around the city. Our events have a positive influence on the community of Coventry as a whole – whether that be through our regular live music events, which sees us frequently booking established and international acts as well as local homegrown talent, or through our artist’s studio, and Community Space, which is used almost every day of the week for Tai Chi and Yoga Classes.
We are based in two neighbouring premises – The Tin at the Coal Vaults is a venue which is set in the former coal storage building in Coventry’s 18th century canal basin. It has two main rooms, one of which contains a stage and performance area; the other has a bar and seating. Next door in Units 1-4 is our office, rehearsal space, artist studio and large community room which is used to host a variety of community activities.
Our live music programme takes place in both our own venue – The Coal Vaults as well as other interesting venues around the city.
Our events programme is innovative, diverse, challenging, and we have a reputation for supporting high quality and innovative arts and artists from Coventry, the UK, and from all over the world. As well as programming live music and events we partner with several local organisations to deliver specific programmes and events.
