The UK premiere of a startlingly innovative production by Dead Centre, the Dublin-based theatre company behind the hit show Hamnet which visited Warwick Arts Centre in 2018.

Beckett’s Room tells the story of the apartment in Paris where Samuel Beckett lived with his partner Suzanne during the Second World War and considers their place within the French Resistance, questioning the price of artistic freedom in times of censorship, and what it means to stand up to a totalitarian regime. But it also speaks to us about the millions of other lives across Europe which were changed by conflict.

Told without live performers on stage, we hear the characters’ voices through headphones and watch their story unfold as objects miraculously move and dance around the stage. Despite their absence, we begin to see the characters as if they were there: the absence of bodies focuses us more intently on their stories, on the world changing around us, changed by us. This is a biography of a room, and an invitation to bear witness to a world as it disappears.

This is sure to be one of the highlights of our Coventry 2021 UK City of Culture year.

World premiere 23 September 2019 at the Gate Theatre, Dublin.

Supported by the Arts Council of Ireland. Beckett’s Room is a co-production with the Gate Theatre, Dublin. It was presented in Dublin Theatre Festival. Co-commissioned by Irish Arts Center and Warwick Arts Centre. Development was supported by the National Theatre Studio and the Trinity College Creative Challenge Award.
