MOBO-nominated Camilla George brings her own critically acclaimed band, showcasing stars of the new UK jazz scene, to Warwick Arts Centre.

Born in Eket, Nigeria, Camilla grew up listening to Fela alongside Jackie McLean and Charlie Parker and became particularly interested in the fusion of African and Western music. After studying at Trinity College London, Camilla George rose through the ranks of Tomorrow's Warriors, the Nu Civilisation Orchestra, Jazz Jamaica and Courtney Pine's Venus Warriors band before coming to lead her own critically-acclaimed projects as both player and composer. Camilla’s African roots and Caribbean ancestry shine through her precise and playful style which brings together jazz with calypso, afrobeat and hip hop.

Dubbed ‘the golden girl of jazz’ by the Evening Standard, Camilla’s debut album, Isang – pronounced ‘e-sang’, meaning journey in Ibibio, her native language – received huge critical acclaim.

Camilla’s music is also politically minded and influenced by African history. Her follow up album, The People Could Fly, explores stories which slaves passed onto their children through generations. While full of sorrow, the album is nevertheless a story of hope for Black people and mankind that we can one day live together in harmony.
