Heritage Open Days 2019

Date: 13 September 2019 - 22 September 2019

Every day

Location: Coventry

Cost: Free

Coventry is celebrating 25 years of Heritage Open Days this month. For two weeks, over 50 of our special venues in the city will open their doors for a celebration of our local history.

Heritage Open Days is a National and European initiative which is co-ordinated nationally by the National Trust with funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery. It is England’s largest grassroots heritage festival.

The National Theme for 2019 is People Power.

So what does ‘People Power’ mean? Perhaps it’s the recent marches that have taken place in London, or the growing awareness of the dangers of single-use plastics. The phrase might conjure up images of the Greenham Common women, the poll tax riots, or even John Lennon and Yoko Ono, long-haired and hippyish in the Amsterdam Hilton. People Power is all these things – from small victories to global triumphs and everything in-between. Heritage Open Days - with its roots in local community and soft activism – has People Power at its heart, and the ability of local communities, groups and individuals to evoke change will be the main focus and theme for 2019.

2019 Venues

Alongside all of this, newly-added family activities are planned (14/15 September - Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, 21/22 September - Coventry City Council House) and an exclusive children's trail will be available during the two week period. Bring little ones to complete the trail and claim their free 'Coventry Heritage Hero' badge as reward. Trails are available from the Coventry Tourist Information Centre or Coventry Cathedral welcome desk.

Keep your eyes peeled for a special Igers Coventry photography competition (with exclusive prize from the Albany Theatre) and be sure to use #covhod on all of your Heritage Open Day social posts!
